5 Tips for Great Bangs

Bangs. They look fabulous on some ladies, and not-so-fab on others. Yet, every few years, they keep on coming back and appearing on heads across the country. Have you had them? Did you wear them right? Maybe you've never had them but want them. Either way, bangs are one of the hottest hair trends this year, and we've got the inside scoop on how to wear them.
 1. Update for Maximum Effect
A center-parted and disheveled style is perfect. When we say bangs, we're not talking about prim and proper, like, the 1950s. More like a mix of the 70s and 90s, more like Farrah and less short and sharp.

2. Research Before You Purchase
Because you have to already have some length before you dive head first into bangs, try a few styles that mimic bangs without the trim. Consider if you have time for the upkeep, your hair's growing pattern, cowlicks, splits, and so on. If it all works out, then bang on!
3. Face Shape Isn't Always Key
Long ago the idea was only certain face shapes could work it out with a bang'in cut. But with modern bang styles (take a look at Jennifer Garner's most recent do), forehead size and face shape can be worked with. Ask your stylist!

4. But Free Reign Isn't Advised
We know that we just said to ignore face shape, which is true in many cases. But what we don't want you to do is to become an anarchist! There are still rules to follow, guidelines to consider with bangs. So, again, confer with your stylist before trimming off your locks.
5. Watch the Length!
Perhaps the worst mistake: bangs that are too short. We're talking middle of the forehead short, like we're heading down to Chelsea for a short walk. Okay, we aren't discriminating against the look, because if you are a punk rocker than more power to you -- it's your things and we get it. But bangs cut to the middle of your brow when that's not your look? It's time for bed.

Bangs give women dozens of options and new versatility in choices of her looks. A few snips with the scissors and presto....A whole new you. And if you're looking for lots of head turning fringe ideas, check out my Pinterest page on bangs-fringe/

The correct way to use bobby pins

From fancy updo's to casual ponytails, bobby pins are an easy and essential beauty tool that can be used for tons of different hairstyles. But, did you know you could be using them the wrong way? Based on the design of the bobby pin, there is a definite right and wrong way to use them, and using them incorrectly can lead to frustration, more hassle, and redo's!
First off, if you look at a bobby pin, you will see it has two different sides. One is flat, while the other is wavy. For optimal security, insert bobby pins into the hair, wavy side facing toward the scalp. Those seemingly pointless waves are actually designed to better grip hair, which will help them stay in place longer.
Another important thing to know about bobby pins is what size works best for your needs. From jumbo to regular to mini, bobby pins come in a variety of sizes. Follow this simple guide to pick the right size for you.
  • Jumbo Pin: For thick hair, buns, and twists.
  • Regular Pin: For average thickness, small braids, and twists.
  • Mini Pin: For fine hair, and final finishing details.
Direction is also key in securing bobby pins. When using bobby pins to secure braids, be sure to insert pins parallel with the braid. Then push the pin forward to lock the braid in place, as well as hide it from view. Don't forget, when using bobby pins, be sure to use ones that are the closest match to your hair color. The less pins seen, the better!

DIY Hair Tips and Tricks You Have to Try

Are you in a hair rut?  Here are a few DIY hair tips and tricks that can mean the difference between flat, mousy hair and full, glossy locks that draws attention from everyone in the room.

1.  Once you have washed and conditioned your hair, turn the water on cold and get your hair wet again.  The cold water will close your hair cuticles and seal in moisture, letting your hair reflect more light.
2.  You learned from your mother and grandmother to wrap your wet hair into a towel to speed the drying process.  However, doing so might actually be increasing the frizz you have to fight.  Gently, towel off the drippy water with a paper towel and then blow dry your hair for a few minutes to heat your hair and speed the evaporation process.  Then let your hair air dry for 5-10 minutes more before you pull out the blow dryer to finish the job.
3.  Rather than waiting until your hair-do is a day old and you are running late for work to apply no-wash shampoo, go ahead and apply a minimal amount at your roots when your hair is freshly washed and dried.  The no-wash shampoo will restrict the amount of oil and debris your hair produces during the day.
4.  You can use Velcro rollers on the top of your hair to increase volume and bounce in your hair.  Either put them in at night to air dry or use the blow dryer to speed the process.
5.  If your bobby pins tend to slip out, spray some of that no-wash shampoo right onto the bobby pin.  It will increase the grip and keep your up-do looking salon perfect all day.
6.  Let time be your friend.  Wash your hair at night and dry 80%.  Then loosely braid your hair in two or more braids.  When you wake up in the morning, you'll have soft body in your hair.
7.  As you blow dry your hair, use your fingers to lift the roots.  Once dry, use a clean toothbrush to backcomb the undersides of hair at the roots.  This will give fine hair more volume.
8.  Let products rest for 10 minutes after applying to your hair.  Whether you are volumizing, straightening, or curling, the products need time to fully absorb into the strands of your hair for full effect.
9.  Use a humidifier at night if your hair is particularly dry.  The moisture will keep hair from becoming brittle.
10.  Tame flyaways with one of these ideas.  Lightly rub a bit of lotion on your hands and then smooth any errant strands.  You can also calm them with a fabric softener sheet.
These simple tricks won't require you to alter your routines too much but can yield fantastic results.  For more ideas on making your hair your crowning glory, contact us.

4 Great Ways to Boost Your Hair's Volume in a Snap

Want hair that remains voluminous and rich, and keeps its volume from morning to night? Want to keep that last remaining trace of your morning blowout from deflating into thin air? We got you covered!
Here are 4 simple tricks anyone can do to add a boost of volume to your hair instantly:
Try Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo can easily add volume to your hair with little to no effort on your part. How? After it's applied not only does it soak up oil your hair doesn't need, it adds some much needed lift to your roots, creating a voluminous look (while cleaning your hair). Simply mist it into your hair and massage it gently into your scalp. Voila! Instant volume.
Pick Up a Curling Iron
Soft, wavy hair will always look more full than thin hair. Grab a medium- or large-barreled curling iron (the bigger the barrel the looser your waves look), and twist your hair in it from about your ear down. Leave out the bottom inch or so (to avoid prom hair), then brush the waves out with a boar-bristle paddle brush.
Try Hairspray on your Roots; Salt Spray on the Rest
Flip your hair over, and mist your roots with a light hold hairspray. For the rest of your hair, mist it with some salt spray from about an arm's length away. The hairspray will add volume to your roots, while the salt spray will texturize and add body to your length. Combined, your hair will look fresh and styled.
Don't Underestimate a Topknot
Not to wear out, rather, to sleep in. Just grab a Scrunchie (retro!), and tie your hair up on the top of your head in a loose bun. This will cause your roots to be pulled up all night long, adding volume throughout the next day, while the bun will create subtle waves.
See. Now wasn't that easy!

6 Ways to Unleash the Power of the Beard [Mens hair, beards for summer]

  •  Mens hair, beards for summer
Beards. Any man can grow one, but what do they do with it once they have it? Do they just let them hang there, dribbling off their chins like leftover spaghetti? No! The man who is worthy of his beard cultivates it, grooms it, takes care of it. He knows that a good beard is like an underscore for his face, and he wants it to look right.
When it comes to mens hair, beards for summer are the ultimate statement for manliness. During winter maybe you let a little scruff grow. After all, it keeps your face warm for the most part. But a man who wears a beard in the summer is a man who knows his beard. What style, though? Which one is right for you? Let's take a look at some face shapes to determine which beard you should have:
    1. Round face- A full beard can make your face look even rounder, but a beard that is longer near the chin and trimmed neatly to the cheeks and sideburns can put a little angle to the look and reduce the roundness. Some men with this look go for the goatee.
    2. Large face- Remember Rod Stewart's band "Small Faces"? Well, this definitely isn't you. If you have a large, manly face you want a large, manly beard to go with it. A tiny little "soul patch" is terribly off balance. "Go big or go home", as they say, and cap it off with a mustache. You're one of the big boys, you've earned this!
    3. Oval face- Will Smith has an oval face. Like any man with an oval face, he can wear any beard style without fear that it will detract from, or worse insult, his facial features. He normally wears a thin, short beard, but a man with an oval face is a canvas ready for anything!
    4. Square face- A man with a good, square face who wants a beard will have to avoid making his face look even more square. Keep your beard trimmed short at the sides but much longer at the chin. This will give you a more oval appearance and accentuate your beard and your face. Like the man with a round face, a goatee is a good pick.
    5. Small face- A man with a small face has to be careful that it's not overwhelmed by the beard. Sideburns and goatees help provide an attractive frame for your features without running the risk of them getting lost in facial hair. Just a little elegance, if you please!
    6. Long face- You definitely don't want to make it long at the chin unless your goal is to make your long face look even longer. Go with full sideburns and either round it out with a full look around the chin or square it off by going shorter at that part.
Yes, any man can grow a beard. Not just any man can wear one like he's mastered it! Check your face shape and select the beard that works for you. It's your beard, wear it like you own it!

Men's Thinning Hair: Dispelling the Myths

Mens thinning hair

About 2 out of every 3 guys will start balding by the time they're 60. Many do not part with their hair voluntarily - American males invest about $1 billion a in an attempt to hold on to their locks. While there's no remedy for mens thinning hair, there are several medications that can slow down the hair falling process and preserve the hair that's already in your head. Current studies note men's hair loss can be set off by malfunctioning hair-making progenitor cells in the skin of the balding area. Guys whose hair gradually thins over time tend to have a depleting amount of these cells - subsequently causing the hair to thin out. To help alleviate any potential confusion that can stem from this confidence-debilitating occurrence, we will have to dispell some of the myths that are associated with men's hair loss.

Hair Shampoo Causes Balding
Many individuals might find a few hairs after they shampoo or brush their hair. Hair strands live in cycles. Every day about 150 to 200 hairs naturally shed. These hairs are then replaced with a new hair. Men's hair loss occur directly in the hair's follicle by deactivating it.
Being Upside Down Will Cause Hair To Grow
It might be a bit comical, but this is a frequently heard misconception. Baldness is not a blood flow issue, but can be triggered by another variable like age, genetics, and overall health. Even if enhanced blood flow stimulated hair growth, the difference will be minimal. You will need to be in a handstand for a long time before you might see a marginal difference - if any.
Shaving Will Cause Your Head Hair to Grow Thicker
Shaving your head will trigger hair to grow back thicker and healthier. If this were true, you would see many people visiting the hair salon to chop off all of their hair to regain their thick locks. You can shave your head all you want - but it's not going to cause the hair to grow back with a vengeance.
Just Old Men Are Bald
This is an absolute misconception because androgenic alopecia impacts males and females of various demographics. Any individual can start losing his or her hair at any age and for numerous reasons. Male pattern baldness can start as early as the late teens.
There's a Surefire Cure For Hair Loss
No kind of medication issued by a doctor will cause the permanent reawakening of dead hair follicles. There are some types of therapy and medicines that are utilized to decrease the rate of baldness and in many cases even promote some hair development. These can be used as an effective preventative measure. There's hope though, for many doctors are feverishly trying to find an effective cure for men's thinning hair.
Anxiety Will Cause You To Go Bald
While there is some reality that anxiety can trigger thinning hair, it is not the major reason for hair thinning. Anxiety is a short term cause of hair thinning. By finding the source of anxiety, you can resolve it.

Monday Beauty Tip: Bangs for Every Face!

Monday beauty tip
Ladies, here is your much deserved Monday beauty tip! Bangs have been used time and time again to add texture to a haircut and add enhancement to the face. Unfortunately, many women are unaware of how crucial the right bang style is and its relation to the shape of one's face.  For instance, if you have an oval face, you're in luck!  With this shape, nearly any cut bang will due.  If you're feeling daring, go for a blunt cut straight across, but make sure that it compliment the rest of your haircut.  Oftentimes, a long, non-layered look does the perfect job!  For those with a very square jaw (so jealous!), longer sides on your bangs will do the trick.  Avoid bangs that cut straight across, and a center part will likely not do your face justice. For the heart-shaped face, straight across bangs are lovely (think Taylor Swift).  Compliment this look with lengthy layers and bangs that reach the brows.  You'll thank us later!  For gals with round faces, stick to long, side-swept bangs.  They will enhance your feminine features while not overdoing the round aspect of your face.  Long layers add the perfect touch! If you decide to go with bangs, remember that all good things take work.  Blow-drying your hair with a round brush will help your bangs to reach their full potential and will leave your girlfriends asking what made you so fabulous. For those with the unfortunate frizz (we've all been there), a simple straightening will do the trick!  As a final note, trim your lovelies once a month :).

Hair Trends: Dry Shampoo Is On the Rise

Hair trends for Summer

People today are always on the go. There barely seems to be enough time in between work, home and social events to fit everything into 24 hours. A new  hair trend, dry shampoo, will allow you to squeeze a few extra minutes into your days.
Washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner takes up valuable shower time each day. In addition, drying and styling your hair after you have washed it adds even more time to your day. Dry shampooing offers an alternative to the time it takes to shampoo, condition and style your hair every day. Switching to dry shampooing will add extra time into your busy day for all that you need to accomplish.
Dry shampoo is generally either made of powder or aerosol. The dry shampoo formula may either have a starch or silica base. The dry shampoo works by soaking up excess oils in your hair in between shampoos. It will help also help give your hairstyles a longer life.
Dry shampoo is easy to use. You need to spray it six inches from your roots and allow at least two minutes before styling. Two minutes is all the time you need to make sure your hair looks fresh and ready to go. After two minutes has passed, you can restyle your hair, or you can keep rocking that awesome hairdo you already have.
It is recommended that you use dry shampoo a maximum of three times. After that, mix it up with a traditional shampooing. With this new method, you only have to go through the traditional shampoo and styling process one to two times a week and or more in summer heat when needed. Dry shampooing can help simplify your lifestyle. Consider dry shampooing as an alternative to traditional shampoo and styling process and add extra minutes back into your busy day. We love the evo water killer dry shampoo or the evo haze powder

Sunday fun day hair: Buns, buns, buns!

sunday fun day hair
Image found on notetosarah.tumblr.com
Women love a good Sunday fun day hair style, but mostly they love putting their gorgeous locks up in a bun to enjoy a relaxing day. Here are some stylish buns that you should try for your Sunday fun day of hair!

The first bun you should give a try is a bohemian bun. The key to making this hair style work is to not have every little bit of it perfect. Let some hair strands hang loose and have fun! This type of bun works the best with smooth hair textures.

For all you ladies who have thick hair, a flat bun is something to consider. This type of bun was designed for long, thick hair. If you really want to go exotic for the day and let your creative juices flow then a pillow bun is the perfect bun for you. Here's a quick tip, to make this bun work you need thick hair so try out some extensions.

The side chignon works best for medium and long hair. Now I'm sure we've all done the lazy bun, but truth be told it's a good go to bun for a day of just relaxation. It's quick and easy for when you just don't feel like doing much with your hair.

For you ladies who may like a challenge, the French braid bun is the perfect bun to start your fun day off with. This bun is braided in the back and has a slight twist to it in the front.  There's so many type of buns out there and these are just a small handful of buns that you can try with your hair. Whatever bun you decide to do, have a great Sunday fun day!

Beauty Tips: 5 Makeup Shades for Every Face

We've all seen her: the woman who can get away with wearing any shade of makeup that you would never in a million years get away with. Sure, there may be a lot of colors and textures you may never be able to pull off, but there are also a lot that work for everyone.

So here's your beauty tip for this week: 5 makeup shades that universally flatter.

Bronze Eyes
Bronze works on all skin tones and with every eye color. For brown eyes, bronze will bring out the gold tones. For lighter eyes, bronze will contrast your eye color and make your eyes pop.
But bronze isn't all created equal. Skin tones should also play a role in your selection. So keep in mind how your tone will work with the bronze you choose.
Berry Lips
Not too brash, not too subdued, berry lips can make you look innocent or vampy, depending on the tone. For deeper complexions, berry colored lips can make your lips look soft while enhancing lip color. For fairer skin, berry lips can give the appearance of depth and save you from looking washed out.
Keep in mind, though, the result you get will depend greatly on the product you choose. So it's best to experiment with different brands to get the berry lips of you dreams.

 Rosy Cheeks
Applying rose color to cheeks has been around since the dawn of (wo)man. It's a universal sign of vitality, health, and youth. For fair skin, stick to shades that add emphasis and are one or two shades brighter than your natural tone. For deeper tones, shades of berry and wine-colors do best to flatter.

Navy Mascara
Navy not bright blue (so there's no confusion). Navy is more neutral and works well with a variety of skin tones and complexions. It works on a simple principle: put a blueish hue next to something white and the whites appear whiter and brighter; in this case, the whites of your eyes.
Fearful of the blue? Then choose a blue that is so dark on your skin tone that it will appear mostly black. No one will be the wiser and your eyes will still be bright and beautiful.

Black Eyeshadow
If you don't own black eyeshadow, we insist you go out and buy some ASAP... go ahead, we'll wait. It is indispensable in every makeup collection. No matter your skin tone or age, a matte black eyeshadow will work magic.

How To Preserve Your Salon Blowout For 5 Days Or More

You've just received your salon blowout. Your hair is straight, bouncy, and full of life. One of the advantages of hair blowouts is it can be used if your hair is straight, curly, or wavy. Salon quality blow outs tend to be a better than blowing out your hair at home - and that's because the hair stylist will have a better view of your hair, as well as better technique. Obtaining a perfect blow out tend to be tedious. You can extend the blowout for a couple of days, allowing you to enjoy your straightened locks for a couple of days.

Seven Beauty Tips: Makeup, Skin, and Nails

Our Blog prides itself in bringing the latest in hair trends, skin care, and fashion ideas. Looking for new beauty tips can be a bit exhausting. But I've compiled some of the more interesting beauty tips that anyone can use. These range from a fix for clumpy mascara, a cure for tired eyes, and even how to get perfectly cleaned hair without the use of shampoo.

Removing Gel Manicures

Gel manicures are designed to stay on the nail for about three weeks. However, there many reasons why you may want to remove them in a pinch. It is generally recommended that you visit a nail salon if you want to remove your gel manicure, but you can also do this at home. Acetone is the active ingredient in this tutorial. The bad thing is, is that acetone stinks and will require you to soak your nails for an extended period of time. You can speed up the process by using tinfoil. Soak five cotton balls with acetone, and place them on your gel manicures. Go ahead and wrap your fingernails with a layer or two of tinfoil. The heat generated by your body will generate heat, improving the action of the acetone. You will find that it'll take half the time for you to remove your gel manicures.

Cure Puffy Eyes With Green Tea Bags

If you tend to wake up with heavy bags around your eyes, then green tea will be your de-puffing savior. Make a cup of tea with your bags of green tea. Pop the used teabags in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Place these teabags on your swollen eyes for about 10 minutes. The caffeine in the teabags will help remove that puffy look and the antioxidants will protect your eyelids from damaging free radicals. If you want to be proactive, you can pop the teabags in the freezer the night prior.

Talcum Powder for Greasy Roots

If you're in a rush and do not have the time to shampoo your tresses, then you can use talcum powder. Talcum powder will attach itself to the oily areas of your hair, allowing it to be removed when you brush it out with a paddle comb. Sprinkle some talcum powder on your roots and massage it in with your fingers. Wait a couple of minutes to allow the talcum powder to absorb the excess sebum. Go ahead and brush the talcum powder off with your brush. You will find that your hair will not only be clean, but will be a bit more voluminous.

Switch Up Your Hair's Part

One of the more easiest – but understated – ways of revitalizing your hairstyle, is to switch up your natural hair part. If you tend to part your hair in the same way every day, you will find that your hair will be "trained" to be in that shape. Switching your hair part will change the way your hair lies, making your hair look fabulous.

Fix Clumpy Mascara

There's a time and place for clumpy mascara. However, I hate it when the mascara runs out and I come out with unintentionally clumpy lashes. To prevent this, take the habit of not pumping the mascara wand. This will forced air in the tube and will cause the mascara to dry out. If you think that your tube of mascara has ran out, then run hot water along the sides of the tube. This will melt the mascara formula that has been compacted on the walls of the tube, allowing your mascara wand reach it. Out of these beauty tips, I find this method to be a great way of enjoying a couple more applications of mascara.

Heat Up Your Eye Lash Curler

If you want sky-high eyelashes, then heat up your lash curler with a hot blow dryer. The hair on your eyes react the same way as the hair on your scalp. Heat will straighten or curl hair. By warming up the eyelash curler, will find that it will be more effective in curling your lashes.

Use Your Neck To Find Your True Match

They are many ways to find out the perfect match for your foundation. I know some people who will buy many different shades of a new a makeup brand, try them out at home, and then bring back the shades that do not color match. Some of us do not have the luxury - or conscious - of doing this. Try out the foundation shade on your neck. Your neck tends to not be exposed the sun, allowing you to find your unique skin color. You will find that you won't have to be as stringent about blending the foundation from your face to your neck, because the color is now seamless.
